The MIT Red Balloon Team has won the DARPA Network Challange, a contest worth $40,000. They submitted the correct location of all ten red balloons sometime Saturday evening, Dec. 5, 2009.

RavenGIS.Com now shows all the balloon locations, along with the correct balloon number. Here is a list of the balloon numbers and locations:

  1. Union Square, San Francisco, CA
  2. Chaparral Park, Scottsdale, AZ
  3. Tonsler Park, Charlottesville, VA
  4. Chase Palm Park, Santa Barbara, CA
  5. Lee Park, Memphis, TN
  6. Collins Avenue, Miami, FL
  7. Glasgow Park, Christiana, DE
  8. Katy Park, Katy, TX
  9. Waterfront Park, Portland, OR
  10. Centennial Park, Atlanta, GA

While other groups were trying to win this prize and share the money in a variety of ways, RavenGIS.Com had a simpler idea. It allowed anyone to post balloon locations and make the locations immediatly available on the same page. It used a simple, static Google maps API without JavaScript.

Using the tool is easy. Select the balloon location in step 1, and click the down arrow to see a map with the numbered balloon someone has already posted here. The balloon marker will appear at the center of the map with the number you selected. The coordinates for all the balloons are provided in the list under tha map.
